Starting a cinematic vlog channel from zero.

Vlog #1 is the origin episode: leaving the comfortable salary to build my own thing, said to a camera for the first time. Five years of editing other footage doesn't fully prepare you for the moment the lens points at you and the story is your own.

The idea

First episodes carry an unfair load — they have to introduce the person, the premise, and the promise of the channel, all while being the episode you're least equipped to make. The way through was to treat it like a brief from a client: who is this for, what's the one thing they should remember? For this channel: entrepreneurship, nomad life, cinematic craft — in that order of honesty.

The shoot

The hardest part of a first vlog is not technical. It's performing sincerity without it curdling into performance. What worked was shooting more takes than pride wants to admit, and keeping the one where I stopped trying to sound like a YouTuber.

The edit

This is where the channel's ambition shows its hand: the grade, the sound, the pacing all aim at cinematic rather than casual. Episode one is the floor, deliberately — the whole point of a channel is that the craft compounds in public. Comparing this cut to the Saigon episodes a month later is the progress report.

What I'd do differently

Less setup, faster into the story. First episodes over-explain because the maker needs the explanation more than the audience does. The viewer decides in the first thirty seconds; the mission statement can wait until they care.
